Death Obituary : Fred A. Kummerow, a German-born biochemist and successful crusader against trans fats, dies at 102

A University of Illinois professor who spent decades pushing for a federal ban on artery-clogging artificial trans fats has died at age 102.

Fred A. Kummerow, a German-born biochemist and lifelong contrarian whose nearlу 50 уears of advocacу led to a federal government ban on the use of trans-fattу acids in processed foods, a ruling that could prevent tens of thousands of premature deaths a уear. Full Story

Our condolences to the family members and friends of Dr. Fred Kummerow, who passed away on Wednesday, May 31, at the age of 102. Dr. Kummerow, known for establishing the connection between trans fats and heart disease, had held an appointment in the Department of Comparative Biosciences since 2001.

"His own diet, said 102 year old Kummerow , included red meat, whole milk and eggs scrambled in butter." Oh, and he also happened to change the world in a remarkable career fighting the trans fat corporate railroaders, taking legal action when he was 99 years old that lead to the US ban on trans fats (effective 2018). What a life lived - and what legacy. RIP Prof FredKummerow.

If he had discovered it even earlier he would still be alive. "Professor Kummerow published his findings about the role of trans fats in "The ban, announced in 2015, goes into effect in 2018." I'll bet the ban will be canceled by Trump for costing jobs.
