People are paying tribute on social media.

Sad news. Former Washington Senators RF Sam Mele, 95, has died in Quincy, Mass. He played for the Senators between 1949 and 1953 and also played for the Red Sox, ChiSox, Orioles and Indians. His best year for Washington was '51 when he led AL in doubles and had 94 RBIs. Ten seasons in the bigs. After his playing days were over, Mele came back to the Senators, first as a scout, then a coach. He went to Minnesota w/ the club as a coach in '61, then became manager and led the Twins to the AL pennant in '65. He was the oldest living manager of a pennant winner. Posted obit from Boston Herald on my Baseball Memories page.

Jeff Adel I always wondered why he didn't manage again after he left the Twins. Given his record there, he must have had chances. Maybe he just didn't want to.
Gary Plunkitt Sam was not only a good player, but a successful manager as well. May God bless the Mele family during this time of loss.
Ken Harlow When I was 6 my dad bought me my first baseball glove. It was a Sam Mele's model

Miguel Martin SAM MELE was a Good Manager. He Managed the team even with BILLY MARTIN second Guessing every move..LOL He retired from Managing but was always considered a Good Manager. Good Player too. Rest in Peace.
