DEATH OBITUARY : Raleigh Wynn, longtime Knoxville coach and educator, dies at 93

Raleigh Wynn Sr., a longtime Knoxville educator, coach and World War II veteran who was active in several community organizations, died this past week at age 93.

Wynn, who died April 30, worked at several area schools teaching science and physical education and coaching football, baseball and basketball at a time when many schools around Knoxville were becoming racially integrated.

People are paying tribute on social media.


Knoxville has lost a legend in the death of Raleigh Wynn, Sr. who was an educator, Coach and athlete who incidently was my teacher at Maynard Elementary and baseball coach of the Post 80 Mets and also my sophomore year at AE. Please keep the family in your prayers.

Service for Raleigh Wynn will be this coming Monday At Mt Zion Baptist Church 2714 Brooks Rd Knoxville Tennessee 37914.
Visiting from 10 to 11 with service to follow.

Rick Roach After my father died at the end of 1994 I would occasionally stop by to see 'Big Wynn'. He never minced his words. As a contemporary of my father he always reminded me you don't know what you have until it's gone. To all the ancestors, you are not forgotten.
