DEATH OBITUARY : Leo Thorsness , Medal of Honor Recipient is dead

MADISON, Ala. - U.S. Air Force Colonel and Madison resident Leo Thorsness has passed away at the age of 85. He was a U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.

He died on Tuesday at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.


Today is National Medal of Honor Day and we salute all of our nation’s Medal of Honor recipients.
Col. (Ret) Leo K. Thorsness received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Vietnam War, here is his story.

PEOPLE ARE PAYING TRIBUTE ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

Medal of Honor recipient Col. Leo K. Thorsness died Tuesday in St. Augustine, Florida, according to a news release from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

Medal of Honor recipient Col. Leo K. Thorsness has died at the age of 85.
The U.S. Air Force veteran was shot down over North Vietnam and held captive by the North Vietnamese for nearly 6 years at the Hoa Lo Prison --aka the "Hanoi Hilton."
Thorsness was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Richard Nixon on October 15, 1973.
Our thoughts are with his family and we thank all military men and women for their service and sacrifice.
There are now only 74 living Medal of Honor recipients.

Our country says goodbye to a great American. Medal of Honor Recipient Leo K. Thorsness Passes Away at 85 Colonel Thorsness earned the Nation's Highest Award for Valor during the Vietnam War. Shot down over Vietnam, he spent nearly six years as a prisoner of war. Seen here with Leo at the flag lowering ceremony at the Normandy American Cemetery in France in 2010, I have the distinct honor of calling Leo and his wonderful wife Gaylee, friends.
