Arizona DPS says Garcia was wearing his seatbelt when he crashed but still sustained fatal injuries.

A Nogales police officer posted a tribute to Garcia saying he was paying his "final respects."

People are paying tribute on social media.

Sending heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of CBP officer Edgard Garcia. He was returning home to Nogales from Tucson when is vehicle traveled through the median, across northbound traffic and struck a tree. We will update you when more info comes in.

RIP Edgard Garcia, I just saw you today, I can't believe you're gone. My prayers are with your family.

Yesterday afternoon the Nogales law enforcement community received sad news. A local CBP Officer, 41 year-old Edgard Garcia lost his life in a tragic vehicle accident on I-19 returning from work in Tucson.
Today he was brought back to Nogales by his family, and brothers and sisters in uniform. When an officer dies in the line of duty, there is no such thing as jurisdiction or color of the uniform. Edgard was given a welcome to Nogales that is deserving for any public servant that has given so much to this community and this country, as he was also a former service member in the U.S. Army.
You will be missed brother. Rest in peace...

It's an awful way to begin this page, but the OFO National Honor Guard extends their condolences to the family of Edgard Garcia, Customs and Border Protection Officer from the Port of Nogales, who perished in a motor vehicle accident yesterday north of Nogales. Rest In Peace, Edgard, your team has the watch from here.
