Obituary : George Jones who played such a critical role in the evolution of country music dies

Country artists of all ages came together to mourn the passing of one of the finest vocalists in recorded history, the great George Jones. Loretta Lynn, Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, and many more all came together to honor the man who played such a critical role in the evolution of country music in society.

Close friends of the late country singer shared memory after memory of Jones at the service taking place at the Grand Ole Opry. Thousands of fans camped out long hours before sunrise in hopes of honoring the man behind the voice that defined the genre of country music for decades.

Crystal Morey I have never cried when any famous country singer has died. The day I found out that George Jones passed away I broke down in tears. His music was something that both my father and I loved to listen to. We could sit on the couch for hours and listen to his music and sing along without saying a word to each other. A simple smile would pass between me and my dad. When my father passed away I thought of the song "who's going to fill their shoes" because that's exactly how I felt about my father and everytime I hear that song to this day I still cry. When I heard that George Jones had died I I listened to that song again and I cried... for me in a way I thought I had lost another part of my dad because of the love we both share for George Jones and his memory and his music. I think that heaven cried the day that man went up to be with the Lord...

Phil Rice See this is what I don't get, one day it's a story about Waylon, the possum, cash, strait etc then the next it's some crappy magazine news about some pop country wannabes. Make up your minds about what type of page you are. Ik there's a bunch of people that think the same way too

Sara Trotter Thank for sharing this memorial service of George Jones. I had watched the live and recorded it but had to change satellite system and lost the recording. That was a nice memorial to him
