Death Obituary : Benjamin Leroy Crowell, Skydiving teacher from Alabama dies of heart disease during tandem jump

Benjamin Leroy Crowell, 58, the late skydiver who amassed more than 9,000 jumps in his lifetime, lost consciousness due to heart disease in midair.

The coroner in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, tells The Advocate that Benjamin Leroy Crowell died in the air over Royal Golf Course near Slidell. His student told authorities that Crowell lost consciousness after they left the plane Sunday.

The St. Tammany Parish coroner's office says instructor Benjamin Leroy Crowell was conducting a tandem jump with a student after taking off from Slidell airport.
Crowell was a 58-year-old Coast Guard veteran, from Theodore, Alabama.
