Obituary: Rev. Hubert E. Debose Sr., longtime pastor of Simmonsville Missionary Baptist Church is dead

The Rev. Hubert E. Debose Sr., longtime pastor of Simmonsville Missionary Baptist Church, died Thursday in Temple at the age of 80.

Debose, who had preached the Gospel for 43 years, served as the Killeen church’s pastor for the past 33 years.

He previously served as pastor of the Independent Missionary Baptist Church in Rosebud for seven years and at the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Gatesville for four years before being called to Simmonsville MBC in February 1983.

In the first year of Debose’s tenure, Simmonsville’s congregation grew from 47 members to more than 200.

The church opened a new sanctuary at 509 S. 42nd St. in April 1985, and has held services there under Debose’s leadership since that time.

Since 2003, Debose had served as moderator of the Good Hope Western General Association. He previously served as the association’s recordinig secretary and vice moderator.

He was also active in the Missionary Baptist General Convention of Texas. In 2005, Debose was elected chairman for the Missionary Baptist General Convention of Texas Foreign Mission Board. The Foreign Mission of Texas sponsors two churches: Belize Faith Mission and Zion Outreach and provides hundreds of meals to the children of Belize.

He also was a member of the Evangelical Board, the Home Mission Board, served as vice chairman of the BTU Board, served as workshop coordinator for the Foreign Mission Board, served 13 years as

In March 2012, Debose received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from the San Antonio Theological College in San Antonio.

Debose was born April 15, 1935. He graduated from O.J. Thomas High School in Cameron and later attended the seminary at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton. He had a 30-year career as a radiology technician.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Anderson Debose; and four children, Marisa, Lisa, Angela and Keenen. He was preceded in death by a son, Hubert Jr.

Services are pending with Chisholm’s Family Funeral Home in Killeen.
