Obituary : Bob Dowling Longtime Woodson Terrace police chief dies

Bob Dowling, 58, who served as the police chief in Woodson Terrace for more than 14 years, died on Saturday, according to the department.
A statement from the department posted on Facebook said Dowling "passed away last night in the company of his loving family and members of this Department. Chief Dowling was loved by so many and highly respected. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends. He will be missed."
Dowling was a lifelong resident of Woodson Terrace who joined the police department as a probationary patrolman on September 17, 1979, according to the department's web site. Woodson Terrace is a community of 4,000 residents immediately south of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.
He entered the Greater St. Louis Police Academy in October 1979, graduated the following February and started his police career.
On July 12, 2001, he was appointed chief after the retirement of longtime Chief Tom McKay. 
Dowling is survived by his wife of 30 years, Niesha Dowling, of Woodson Terrace. They have three grown children.
