The IDF named the soldier murdered in Sunday night’s terror attack in Beersheba as Sgt. Omri Levi. He is 21 and a resident of a nearby Bedouin town. He did not have a criminal record.
Al-Okbi’s mother is originally from the Gaza Strip and moved to Israel after she married an Arab-Israeli citizen, according to the Shin Bet security service.
Israeli Police have confirmed members of Alukabi’s family have been arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting.
The two suspects are understood to have entered the bus station before one began shooting as the other started stabbing, the Jerusalem Post reported. He stabbed a soldier and grabbed his M-16 rifle, then opened fire on the bus station.
Levi will be laid to rest in a cemetery located in his home village of Sdei Hemed, in central Israel, on Monday.
Police are investigating into how Alukabi managed to slip past security officers stationed at the entrance to the bus station armed with a knife and a handgun. Israeli media charged that he was shot exclusively due to the color of his skin.
“It should be noted that the police see this in a very severe light and will not allow people to take the law into their hands, and everyone should act with restraint and carefulness and allow the police to do their job”, police spokeswoman Luba Samri was quoted as saying by CNN. The police have said that during these attacks, about 18 of the assailants were killed on the spot by police, soldiers or security guards. His riffle was used against him by the assailant during the attack.
