U.S. Senator Mike Lee, R-Utah Sponsors Bill to Protect Religious Freedom

The mainstream media may be focused on what the Supreme Court’s decision on same-sex marriage means for the LGBT community, but U.S. Senator Mike Lee, R-Utah, is focused on what it means for the rest of America. He’s especially concerned about the impact on religious schools and institutions if the high court legalizes same-sex marriage. Lee believes legalization might lead to the closing of schools and churches, so he’s introducing legislation to protect religious liberties.
Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, President Obama’s representative at the Supreme Court, made a statement that caught the senator’s attention. During oral arguments in the Obergfell v. Hodges case, Verrilli conceded to Justice Samuel Alito that religious schools would be in danger of losing their tax-exempt non-profit status if they do not accept a new definition of marriage.
