The city of Hawkins, Texas has drawn the ire of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) for placing a sign that says “Jesus Welcomes You to Hawkins” along U.S. Highway 80. After being notified about the sign, the FFRF sent a letter to Hawkins city officials demanding its removal, saying it violates the separation of church and state.
A recent city council meeting held to discuss the issue was packed with both supporters and opponents. The majority of the attendees strongly support keeping the sign in its current location.
“It’s not about a religion welcoming you, it’s about what a community wants. This is us welcoming you; this is what we believe in,” said one supporter.
However, another suggested they move the sign to a location on private property where they could do whatever they want, including making it bigger.
