Pilgrim Church of Birmingham hires gay pastor

The historic Pilgrim Church in Birmingham has hired an openly gay senior pastor who is ready to officiate same-sex weddings.
The Rev. Paul Eknes-Tucker was named senior pastor this month and preached his first sermon at Pilgrim on June 14.
He is ready in the event that the U.S. Supreme Court rules to make gay marriage legal nationwide, which could happen next week. "I'm cautiously optimistic that it's going to happen," Tucker said.
"I am just thrilled we got back here in time that we can provide marriage services," Tucker said. "We are set at day one to marry folks. I never thought I'd see it in Alabama, quite honestly."
Pilgrim Church, 2817 Sixth Ave. South, was once located on Montclair Road in Mountain Brook and was known as the "Blue Roof Church" for its distinctive blue roof. It moved to a renovated office building in the Lakeview district in 2010. "They wanted to be a church in the core of the city that ministers to Birmingham," Tucker said.
