FAYETTE | A woman who retired as pastor of a Lutheran church in Decorah last fall has been identified as the person killed in a head-on car-semi crash near Fayette on Sunday, the Iowa State Patrol reported.
The accident occurred on Iowa Highway 150 south of 240th Street at approximately 11:23 a.m.
Joan A. Mau, 65, was northbound on Highway 150 when her vehicle crossed the center line and collied head-on with a southbound semi-trailer.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts. The semi driver, Mark Ungerer, 56, of Hawkeye, was transported to Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union with undisclosed injuries.
Mau retired as pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Sept. 1, where she had served for 15 years. According to the church’s website in announcing her retirement, she was the daughter of a pastor who earned her bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., her master of religion degree from the University of Iowa and a master of divinity degree from Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque.
