Catholic bishop of Charlotte Bans Gay Conference On Church Property

Charlotte, N.C. (WJZY) -- It's a controversial “change of venue” for a conference on welcoming gay and lesbian people into faith communities.
That's after the Catholic bishop of Charlotte put his foot down, banning the conference from church property.
Saint Peter's in uptown is the oldest Catholic parish in the Queen city. It's also, according to Diane Troy, one of the more progressive ones.
“The way I found St. Peter's was by parish hopping, trying to find a place I fit in,” said Diane Troy.
Troy is a parishioner at Saint Peter's Catholic Church as well as the president of PFLAG which stands for Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
“My son is gay. I was raised Catholic and went through Catholic schools. Like so many parents when their child comes out, you see conflicts arise with your faith community and belief system,” said Troy.
To help parents and others like her, Troy got permission from St. Peter's to bring in a Catholic nun with an organization called “New Ways” to speak on gay and lesbian inclusion. That's when the church got a call from the bishop.
“I found out about the cancellation by the bishop from Father Pat. He called me and let me know. He was disappointed as I was,” said Troy.
