Obituary : Rev Tom Devonshire dies at 81

A PIONEERING vicar from Regent’s Park who bridged the gap between religion and the arts has died.

The Rev Tom Devonshire Jones led the congregation at St Mark’s, in Prince Albert Road, from 1981 to 2000.

The clergyman was passionate about combining faith with art.

He was a director of Art and Christian Enquiry (ACE) for many years, working as a consultant for the National Gallery and the Arts Council of England.

He encouraged churches to work with artists by commissioning quality pieces.  The Oxford-educated vicar, who was ordained in 1960, died on Friday, aged 81.

Current St Mark’s vicar, the Rev William Gulliford, paid tribute to him as “an incredible strategist with huge reach”.
