Obituary : Rev. Edmund J. Dobbin, dies at age 79

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Rev. Edmund J. Dobbin, 79, a former Staten Island resident and president emeritus of Villanova University, died Sunday in the Villanova Monastery in Philadelphia.
The Rev. Dobbin became president of Villanova University in 1988; he spent 18 years as head before retiring in 2006.
Born in Brooklyn, the Rev. Dobbin was raised in Great Kills. He graduated from the former Augustine Academy in 1953. He also is a 1958 alumnus of Villanova, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy. He went on to receive his master of arts degree from Augustinian College in 1962, the same year he was ordained an Augustinian priest. In 1964, the Rev. Dobbin received his master of science degree in mathematics with a minor in physics, and in 1968, he received his licentiate in sacred theology -- both degrees from the Catholic University of America. In 1971, he was awarded the degree of doctor of sacred theology from the University of Louvain, Belgium.
