Obituary :Rev. Dr. Samuel Kelton Roberts dies

The Rev. Dr. Samuel Kelton Roberts always was looking for the transcendent.
As the Anne Borden and E. Hervey Evans Professor of Theology and Ethics at what is now Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond from 2000 to 2014, he found that “things in ethics transcended doctrines in churches,” said a son, Samuel K. Roberts Jr. of New York. “He was friends with rabbis, Catholic clergy, Episcopalians, Presbyterians (and more). His own practice was Baptist.
“He was more concerned about where people found common ground. Ethics for him was a way to spiritually and rationally (relate) to all other human beings.”
Dr. Roberts, who also had served as professor of Christian ethics and dean at Virginia Union University in Richmond, died Feb. 24 in Baltimore after a brief illness.

The 70-year-old Columbia, Md., resident was honored at a wake and funeral Thursday at First Baptist Church in Vienna. Burial will be at noon today, Friday, in Arbutus Memorial Park Cemetery, 1101 Sulphur Spring Road in Arbutus, Md.
