Obituary :Rev. Chester A. Seals of Syracuse, NY dies at 79

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Rev. Chester A. Seals, who for decades was a leader in Central New York's religious community, died Sunday. He was 79.
Seals was founder and pastor of Soul Healing Ministry Church of God in Christ and since 1979 had served as superintendent of several other Churches of God In Christ, overseeing them. He was also a long-standing member of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Syracuse.

He attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md., and Onondaga Community College.
Seals said in an interview in 1995 that he and his brother became pastors because of their father, the late Rev. Hyrd Seals Sr., who was a pastor for more than 50 years.
"Ever since I was small and observing my father's life and his commitment to God and the church, I felt this was what I wanted to do, " Seals said. "He had such a concern for people ... and so much compassion."
Seals split his time between work and his faith. He spent his nights and weekends preaching, but by day he worked as a mail carrier for decades before eventually retiring. The balancing act, however, was not without challenges. Over the years Seals learned to give up vacations and save days off for times when his church needed him.
