Obituary : Japan Bilingual Pastor, John Richard Stemmons, dies at 71

A Tulsa-born pastor of an English and Japanese Christian church in Japan died in a blaze at his home Saturday in the Tokyo area.
John Richard Stemmons, 71, was inside his two-story residence in the Kugenumashinmei neighborhood with his wife, Hiromi, around 2 p.m. when the fire began, according to reports from Yahoo! Japan and local television media. The fire was presumably caused by a lit candle used to keep the couple’s birds warm on the first floor, fire crews and police told reporters there.
Firefighters said they found Stemmons’ body inside the home, and the fire was extinguished about three hours later. No other injuries were reported, and an estimate on how much the damages would cost to repair wasn’t available Sunday.

Stemmons and his wife were pastors at the Amazing Grace Bible Church, also located in Fujisawa, in the Kanagawa Prefecture and part of the Greater Tokyo
