Atonement Lutheran Church’s congregation voted Sunday to call a woman who is in a same-sex marriage to serve as its associate pastor.
Julie Recher received more than the two-thirds majority needed to become the associate pastor of one of Berks County’s largest Lutheran churches.The congregation broke out in applause when the vote total, 247 votes for and 88 against with seven abstentions, was read shortly before noon.”I think the most important thing today is we called a qualified, outstanding person,” the Rev. Richard Summy said after the vote. “We will now move forward in faith. That’s the most important thing.”
